By now most people have probably heard of and sampled ChatGPT which launched at the end of 2022. The AI model has the ability to answer questions, write emails, generate lines of code and the list goes on.

This revolutionary technology, although not a direct competitor for Google, is impacting the way searches are conducted, which in turn could dramatically alter the shape of search engine optimisation.

SEO and Marketing professionals alike have only begun tapping into ChatGPT’s potential and we need to learn to embrace AI technology as opposed to worrying about it. So let’s look at some of the ways we can use ChatGPT for SEO.

Creating Content

We all know that ChatGPT can create various forms of content be that an essay, poem or even a blog. However it is important to highlight that as powerful a tool as it is, it still has limitations such as it’s unaware of current events, has a built in bias and is programmed to avoid certain types of content. It is not a replacement for human copywriters.

It’s also worth noting that Google algorithms are able to identify and penalise AI-generated content, even that which uses anti-detection algorithms.

When it comes to creating content the chatbot can be great to assist you with generating ideas. I asked ChatGPT what is SEO and this was its response:

As you can see, the response I obtained consisted of 3 paragraphs that were well written and gave me a good summary of what SEO is. So long as you’re careful, ChatGPT can help streamline many unwanted content tasks such as ad variations. However you must always investigate any AI generated content, as it may contain inaccurate information.

Keyword research

Another good use case for ChatGPT is to help you with your keyword research to further develop your content strategy. All you have to do is open the chatbot and type in a few of your target keywords, and ask for some related ones.

To test this functionality, I asked chatGPT to provide me with some keywords around digital marketing.

The chatbot presented me with a list of keywords which might have taken me much longer to come up with via the conventional methods of keyword research. These keywords are quite broad which is to be expected but they’re helpful for sparking some ideas.

Composing And Managing Analytics Reports

For the majority of marketers reports and spreadsheets are not the most enjoyable parts of the job, but they are imperative in order to retrieve the data to prove your efforts are making a real difference.

That’s where ChatGPT comes in. For example, you want to compose regular expressions for analytics reporting, but you don’t have a strong programming background. And you want to filter a report using specific words to identify opportunities to expand your FAQs or how-tos.

ChatGPT allows anyone with a basic knowledge of how these expressions work to use the chatbot to generate a list automatically.

Similarly, if you frequently grapple with Excel or Google Sheets (and most of us do), ChatGPT can eradicate much of the headache by writing formulas and examining data.

I’ve only scratched the surface of how AI can assist you in these processes. There’s a great article which covers these topics in much more detail if you are interested and want to learn more.
